Ranking The States On Elder Abuse Protections
A ranking compiled by the website WalletHub of all 50 states (and the District of Columbia) gives North Carolina generally high marks for its protections of elderly citizens. The survey compared states using 14 different criteria.
South Carolina placed at the very bottom of the overall rankings at 51st; Virginia ranked near the middle of the list at 34th.
North Carolina placed 9th overall in the list of states with the best elder abuse protections. Sadly, though, the state ranked 49th in the subcategory of nursing home quality, indicating the need for family members to be vigilant in protecting loved oned receiving nursing home care here. WalletHub notes that "more than 95 percent of all cases [of elder abuse] go unreported."
